The Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary defines ego as “the idea or opinion that you have of yourself, especially of your ability and intelligence, and your importance as a person. The Urban Dictionary defines ego “as the part of you that defines itself as a personality, separates itself from the outside world, and considers itself a separate entity from the rest of nature and the cosmos.”
Common behaviors coming from those living in a egocentric space include:
- looking at one’s own perceptions and not considering those of others
- seeing self as always in the right and as all important regardless of life’s situations
- looking out for only oneself with no concern for the implications of this viewpoint
You can operate totally from a place of ego or from a balanced place of ego. If you move beyond pure ego, you can open to the joys and gifts the Universe has in store for you. This process of moving beyond ego can best be experienced through meditation and stillness. In the Silence, you can learn to distinguish between your own true self which makes you supremely happy and your completely human energy of being, doing and having. When you simply “are” in the present and feel happy, you are most often free of ego.
Why would you want to be free of ego? Carrying ego separates you from empathy for others, from the Divine Whole, from shared views and goals, from inner peace and from feeling connected with those around you. Ego sets you apart from other’s needs and concerns, from a sense of compassion and from growing into more a loving and kind individual. Further, when you are free of ego, you do not measure yourself by your external accomplishments, your power, or your prestige.
The self perception that you are what you do, own, or how you appear to others, is a heavy burden to put on yourself. Continuing to operate from ego repels others and can make you feel lonely, uncared for, and as if you are constantly striving for externalities to get better and better. The inner eternal self is ignored with ego imbalance as you put all your eggs into the human basket of money, power, image and holdings. A sense of worth based on external accolades and accumulation, is always prone to attack by others and eventually maybe from yourself as well in an effort to find inner peace and joy.
Focusing on ego is often a road to disappointment. You only see yourself as what you do, how you do it and how you are recognized and compensated for your accomplishments. So, self judgement is totally present in every aspect of your life. You can spend lifetimes in this human space, until it dawns on you that there may be another way to live your life. You might start with gratitude on a daily basis, focusing on all that is of delight to you. You might begin to create. You have to retrain your mind to find peace within and then an entirely new dimension of life opens up.
